Author Jonathan D. Lambert has a talent for attitude and how a character is shaped by their environment, and that makes for a gripping, character-driven fantasy with rich world-building and high stakes. The pacing of the plot is suitably fast to keep readers engrossed, but the twist-filled adventure also has moments of silence and quieter, interpersonal dramas where readers can get to know the characters and see their relationships and personal strength blossom. Desnia and Delvan both have tough exteriors shaped by their harsh world, but the cracks in their armor let readers into a unique psychological and emotional world where readers want to see them succeed. These complexities also help the morally grey qualities of the novel to shine for an immersive tale of power, deception, and a thin line between hero and villain that is cleverly balanced and perfectly told. Overall, Of Gems and Stone is a fantasy tale I would highly recommend, and I can’t wait to see what this truly epic series brings next.
